The field work x gamification crossover
As the year winds down and we prepare for a well-deserved holiday break, it’s a good idea to look ahead to see what 2026 might bring. And what we see here at Plecto is increasing gamification use in home service field work.
Gamification might not be the most intuitive thing you think of when you hear the words “home service” or “field work.” And we get it!
However, it’s worth bearing in mind that gamification is more than just a gimmick. Rather, it’s an essential motivational strategy that has the potential to build individual performance and team cohesion.
How? We’ll take a look below – but first it’s worth mentioning what exactly gamification is and why it’s so important.
Gamification – what is it?
Gamification is the practice of incorporating game-based activities into daily work or life. Here are some common examples of gamification:
- You earn points (miles) for taking a flight. You can then redeem these points for a prize (discounted or free flights).
- Your fitness app tracks your runs and workouts, allowing you to compete against your friends.
- You level up in your language learning app, and earn badges and jewels on the side.
Gamification succeeds because it gives you tiny dopamine hits for completing tasks: you get a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction upon doing so, and this motivates you to keep going up to the “next level.”
In other words, gamification breaks down an activity into smaller chunks–making it easier, more manageable, and most importantly, fun.
Using gamification in field work
With all of this in mind, it becomes easier to see the crossover between gamification and home service field work. You can bring elements of gamification into your home service jobs—and even your HQ office work—to make them more manageable and enjoyable. And once the competition kicks in, gamification is also bound to improve your team cohesion, morale, and productivity.
But how does this all work? The answer is easy: data dashboards.
Dashboards—such as real-time and dynamic dashboards from Plecto—don’t just show KPIs and other metrics. They are also the perfect medium for displaying gamification features.
Why? Because when your gamification mode is activated, seeing what your teammates are doing in real time creates the perfect motivator to keep going. In other words: visualized gamification is the engine of competition!
Below are four Plecto-compatiable gamification methods to generate competition and bring your technicians and teams to the next level of field service work.
1. Leaderboards
What are they?
Leaderboards might be considered the “bread and butter” of Plecto gamification. The concept is simple: display everyone’s metrics on a ranked list. The first, second, and third place winners are awarded (virtual) gold, silver, and bronze medals—just like in the Olympics.
What can I use them for?
Award points tracked on leaderboards for punctual arrivals, first-time fix success, positive customer reviews, upsells and cross-sells, and clean safety records. You can also do seasonal challenges on leaderboards (with fun dashboards to match!).

2. Achievements and Notifications
What are they?
Badges, or Achievements as they’re called in Plecto-ese, are small icons that appear next to an employee’s name that indicate when said employee has completed a task, made an accomplishment, or otherwise “leveled up.” Achievements are often combined with Leaderboards, as you can see in the image above.
Similarly, Notifications are virtual messages that appear when an employee has completed a task or achieved a win, whether small or big. The best part? Notifications can be accompanied by a funny video or light and sound.
What can I use them for?
Use Achievements to acknowledge a technician’s next level in specialized training, in obtaining a certification, or handling a new type of service call.
Meanwhile, use Notifications when a technician has completed a job or or received a positive customer rating. You'll get the whole office to acknowledge and celebrate their accomplishments, boosting team morale in the process.

3. Contests
What are they?
If anything has the ability to build individual motivation while getting your adrenaline going, it’s Plecto’s Contests. Personalize your avatar and prepare to race against your teammates! Climb the mountain, race through space, or climb a jungle vine to see who can accomplish a given goal first.
What can I use them for?
Contests are perfect for encouraging employees to hit their targets. Use case scenarios are numerous — try setting contests for most jobs completed, highest first-time fix rate, most upsells, quickest time-to-invoice, or a contest combining all of these. Basically, as long as you can give your employees a structure to their work — something to work and compete for — you can use a Plecto Contest.

4. Rewards
What are they?
This brings us to our final gamification method: Rewards. While having a sense of intrinsic motivation is a powerful thing, sometimes it’s best to sweeten the deal and add a bit of IRL attention to raise the stakes. Plecto offers two mechanisms for obtaining rewards: the Reward Store and Spinning Wheel.
To use the Reward Store, employees obtain virtual tokens for completing tasks that can be redeemed for real-life prizes in the Store.
Meanwhile, the Spinning Wheel is a wheel of fortune. You’ll give it a spin, see where it lands, and claim the corresponding prize…or not!
What can I use them for?
Rewards are a perfect complement to the other gamification features described above. Use alongside the others to provide employees with real-life recognition of their accomplishments.
For example, a first-place finisher on a Leaderboard or in a Contest gets first dibs in selecting a prize from the Reward Store. Or employees with the most Notifications in a given timeframe are eligible to Spin the Wheel for a prize.
Prizes can include anything you think your team would enjoy: tickets to the movies, a dinner date for two, or tickets to the big game. Just be sure your Rewards are gifts your technicians will genuinely enjoy.

The power of gamification in home service
Gamification is one of the most impactful ways to improve team motivation. It gives your technicians a bigger stake in the work they do by making it more engaging and, most importantly, fun.
Looking into the new year in our Plecto-themed crystal ball, we see a bright future ahead for home service firms that want to use gamification to boost both their team and individual productivity. Check out Plecto today for a free two-week trial if you want in on the action!
